The Ducal Palace in Urbino is an important Italian Renaissance building that was commissioned by Federico di Montefeltro, the lord of the Duchy from 1444 to 1482. Urbino Ducal was primarily constructed to showcase the glory of Montefeltro’s family and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998. The attraction is also the birthplace of the acclaimed artist Rapahel.

Designed by Luciana Laurana, the stupendous courtyard at Urbino Ducal was inspired by the Medici Palaces in Florence. The courtyard of Ducal Palace is a stunning combination of pale stone and brick. The inscription running across the top of its arches commemorates the glory of Federico, condottiere, and prince.

The Biblioteca del Duca was a library of illuminated manuscripts before it was taken over by the Pope in 1657. Federico spent huge amounts of money to create the library of the Ducal Palace, and during its heyday, the library was considered to be the most splendid in its time.

The Duke’s Study

Built between the twin turrets of Urbino Ducal, Federico got a splendid study built for himself. Featuring wood inlay, the Duke’s study is the highlight of Ducal Palace. The study was the place where Federico indulged in his passions such as art, culture, religion, war, love, music and caged birds.

Apartments of Iole

Apartments of Iole

The Apartments of Iole are the oldest part of Urbino Ducal. Built by Federico’s father Count Guidantonio, the apartments feature a large fireplace decorated with carved figures of Hercules and Iole. The rooms in this part of the Ducal Palace were built by Tuscan craftsmen, including Michele di Giovanni da Fiesole.
